REFLECTION ON TRIP TO SINGAPORE CHRISTIAN HOME FOR THE AGED

Excited, full of butterflies in our stomachs, anticipation... etc.
These were the feelings that could be used on us (at least for us girls) when we arrived outside the Singapore Christian Home for the Aged.
We had spent time practicing for the songs we were planning to sing for the people in the old folks home in school and also on the bus on the way there, and also brought canned food for them to eat.
However, due to our over-excitement, we apparently left our self-wrapped Hamper containing the canned food and the pandan cake that we had bought before going to the home on the bus.
Unfortunately, the bus wasn't going to be the same one fetching us back to school, so we had to go to the home empty-handed and Miss Lim had to explain that we left the stuff on the bus to the person-charge.

When we first stepped outside the home, we were all nervous to go inside the room where the old folks stayed in as most of us did not visit that place before.
When I stepped in, I saw most of the old folks lying on the bed, and some sitting on wheelchairs in front of their beds.
Their beds were all arranged in two rows beside the walls in the narrow, stuffy room.
At first, we were all unsure of what to do and only started lining up to sing for them when instructed to do so by Miss Lim.
There were some chaos at that point of time as we did not plan beforehand how we would stand to sing to the old folks.
In the end, we stood messily in a line and sang some songs to them.
Then some of the girls started to go around talking to the old folks while the boys did some cleaning outside, and some of us continued singing songs to the old folks.
However, I don't think they really understand what we were singing as most only speak dialect there but they still tried to listen and held their heads up, for most.
I think that is really nice of them as they did put in effort to try and listen to us.

After singing, we went to interact with the old folks and I actually did not know what to speak to them in the first place or how to start the proper conversation with them as my command of Cantonese is not really good and I didn't know what to say to them lest I said something sensitive.
In the end, some of us just went up to one person and started asking How are you,
How old are you, Have you finished eating and etc.
When we did not know how to express what we wanted to say in dialect, we used our hands to signal to them and I think they sort of grasped what we wanted to say.
However, some of them sort of ignored us when we tried to speak to them and that was sort of disencouraging for us, but I thought that perhaps they did not understand us or were tired and did not want to reply.
Nevertheless, most I spoke to were reasonably friendly and waved to me in return when I waved to them as I walked around.

Of them all, there was one particular 'troublesome' lady who kept complaining about the position of her cushion placed behind her chair and kept whining for us to help her push it up and down.
However, I noticed that the people-in-charge did not bother about her and when i asked them, they said that the old lady was fussy and they had no time to attend to her as there was a limited number of helpers.

I felt very sorry for the old folks as most of them said that their children were all busy at work and had no time to visit them at the home.
I feel that their children should not abandon their parents in the home just so it would be more convenient for them and they would not need to attend to their parents' sickly needs.
Their parents brought them up painstakingly; shouldn't the children repay them by taking good care of them instead of shoving all their responsibility to the home's helpers.
Although some of their children may have their own problems that we may not be aware of, but they should at least take off some time to visit their parents frequently.
Have they ever considered how their parents might feel in that stuffy, small room, feeling so isolated and alone, without any kith or kin?
Have they ever wondered how their parents spent their days living in the home?
Spending sleepless nights because of mosquitoes, and starving days as a result of the food being not-so-nice.
The very thought of it makes me feel... angry? :(

Overall, I think the trip was fruitful! I learnt to cherish the things we have around us.
We are definitely MUCH MORE fortunate than them. ]:
